She is one of my favorite people in the world. My former next door neighbor Effie Edwards was a teacher in Little Rock, Arkansas for many years and when she decided one day to leave her job in Arkansas and move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming knowing almost no one.. I had two thoughts. ONE: I knew I loved that girl for a reason! Talk about BRAVE and ADVENTUROUS!! AND TWO: I thought this HAS to be one AMAZING destination!
I asked Effie to talk about why she loves it so much and here’s what she said: Why Jackson Hole? My initial answer would be “what’s not to love?!” Jackson Hole is my happy place!!! It is everything I love to do, all in one place. My backyard is Snow King, which is the “Town Hill” and has the steepest north-facing FIS racecourse in the lower 48. I am so blessed to hike to the top almost every day! Also, the magnificent Teton Range and Grand Teton National Park are a short drive out of the valley. I love to be outside, enjoying adventures in the outdoors. When I lived in the South, I didn’t have a lot of “activities” friends. Here in Jackson Hole, I can always find someone is up for an outdoor adventure. I grew up coming out West to visit family. One year we drove to Yellowstone and had quite the adventure, exploring and fly fishing. I came back to work on a dude ranch in 2012 and the rest is history. I like to say, “That Jackson Hole is like a vacuum, it sucks you in!” I think the thing that I love the most is the endless number of adventure opportunities. You don’t have to do the same hike, go to the same lake or river, all the time. The prospects for adventure are limitless!
WHAT TO DO IN JH? Where do I even begin?! If I had to pick my favorite activity this might be it. There are endless hikes and peaks near Jackson Hole. You can be ambitious and hike 20 plus miles in a day or do something as simple as a short, flat hike around String and Leigh Lake. In July, the wildflowers are gorgeous and we have nice long, warm days! I don’t work in the summer and my girlfriends and I have “BIG HIKE MONDAYS!!!”
I love to go stand up paddle boarding and to be on the water. I purchased a paddle board from Rendezvous River Sports 2 years ago and it has been a great investment. I love to get out on the water most weekends. There are so many great spots to go…..here are a few of my faves….String, Leigh, Jenny, Slide and Jackson Lakes. The Snake River is also a great spot!
Fishing is a favorite past time in my family. I grew up fishing and it still remains one of my favorite things to do. I love the feeling of getting that bite and reeling in your catch. Whether you go out on your own or go on a guided trip, the fishing in this area is amazing! Funny fact about me….I have been fishing my whole life and took the hook out of the fish’s mouth to release it for the 1st time this summer….ha!
Dornan’s is located at the Moose entrance to Grand Teton National Park. Their deck has stunning views and great food and drinks to be enjoyed after a long hike or fun day spent in the park. Also, on Monday nights they have the famous Hootenanny.
The Jumping Rock at Phelps Lake is a must do!!! It is about a 20 foot drop into the water. It feels great on a warm summer day, after you have been hiking. You will find yourself climbing up to go again and again!
Horseback riding is a wonderful way to spend a day. You can go on a short ride or for an all day adventure. The Jackson Hole Town Square is famous for its antler arches. Millions of tourists pose under these arches each year for photos. They have a Western”shoot-out” each evening at 6, in the summer. The square is surrounded by fun restaurants, good shopping and fun night-life. The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is located on the square and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012. You can go here to enjoy a beer on the saddle seats, swing dance, play pool and do some quality people watching!
